Girls' Generation are a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment, who debuted on August 5, 2007 with the single "Into the New World." The group debuted with nine members: Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun. They rose to wide prominence in 2009 with "Gee," a bright, hook-driven single that became one of the defining hits of the era and earned the group the nickname "the Nation's Girl Group." A run of follow-ups including "Genie," "Oh!," "The Boys," and "I Got a Boy" cemented their status as one of the most commercially dominant acts of K-pop's second generation, with significant success in Japan as well. Jessica departed the group in 2014, leaving an eight-member lineup. Several members also pursued solo and subunit work, including the trio Girls' Generation-TTS. Widely regarded as a landmark act, Girls' Generation are credited with helping expand the global reach of Korean pop.
