Irene, born Bae Joohyun, is a South Korean singer and the leader of the SM Entertainment girl group Red Velvet, which she debuted with on August 1, 2014 via the single "Happiness." Within Red Velvet she serves as leader, lead dancer, vocalist, and the group's visual. In 2020 she formed Red Velvet's first official sub-unit alongside fellow member Seulgi, billed as Red Velvet - Irene & Seulgi. The duo debuted on July 6, 2020 with the EP Monster, whose title track of the same name was promoted with the follow-up single "Naughty." Monster recorded strong first-day sales and ranked among the best-selling K-pop girl-group sub-unit releases at the time. Irene has also pursued acting alongside her music work.
