Lay, born Zhang Yixing, is a Chinese singer, rapper, songwriter, and actor, known in K-pop as a member of EXO and its Chinese sub-unit EXO-M. He joined the SM Entertainment group at its 2012 debut and rose to prominence across both Korea and China. From around 2015 he built a parallel solo career centered on the Chinese market, establishing his own studio and releasing his first EP, Lose Control, in 2016, followed by multiple studio and mini-albums on which he served as a hands-on producer and songwriter. In October 2020 he founded his own company, Chromosome Entertainment Group, an agency aimed at recruiting and training new artists, modeled in part on systems he experienced early in his career. As both a performer and a label founder, Lay is recognized as one of the most commercially successful Chinese artists to emerge from the K-pop system.
