BoA is a South Korean singer who debuted under SM Entertainment on August 25, 2000 with the album "ID; Peace B," released when she was thirteen after a two-year training period that included Japanese and English lessons. Enabled by SM's partnership with the Japanese label Avex, she made her Japanese debut in 2001 and broke through with the 2002 album "Listen to My Heart," becoming the first South Korean pop artist to top Japan's Oricon albums chart. Across the 2000s she released a string of successful albums in both countries, with Korean hits such as "Atlantis Princess" and "Girls on Top," and she also pursued music and acting in the United States. As one of the earliest and most successful first-generation idols, BoA is widely credited as a pioneer of the Korea-Japan pop crossover and a foundational figure in K-pop's international expansion. She later took on a longstanding role as a director at SM Entertainment.
